A certain amount of conflict in families is inevitable and sometimes families can actually benefit from conflict through teaching them how to compromise.
Conflict can happen when family members have different views or beliefs and conflict can arise when people misunderstand each other and jump to the wrong conclusion. Issues of conflict that are not resolved can lead to arguments and resentment. Furthermore, ongoing conflict can be stressful and damaging to relationships.
Counselling can provide families with strategies for preventing and resolving conflict. Children and parents can learn how to relate well to each other and the importance of positive communication and family meetings. Counselling can help families to understand the triggers of conflict and how the nature of family fights allows them to learn lessons about their patterns of behaviour. Dr Janet Hall’s book, Fight-Free Families can assist with counselling as it provides strategies for parents and children for preventing and resolving conflict between parent-child and siblings.
